Why Community Matters More Than the House You Buy

When people begin searching for a home, it's natural to focus on the details inside the house.
The kitchen.
The flooring.
The number of bedrooms.
The backyard.
But after living in Central Oregon for more than 30 years and helping people navigate important life transitions, I've noticed something interesting:
The happiest homeowners rarely talk about their countertops.
They talk about their community.
They tell stories about morning walks with neighbors, coffee at the local café, pickleball games that turned strangers into friends, and grandchildren who can't wait to visit because there's always another trail to explore or another adventure waiting just around the corner.
Those are the memories that matter.
That is why I believe choosing a community deserves just as much attention as choosing a home.

None of these are better than the others—they're simply different.
The key is finding the one that fits your lifestyle.
I often encourage buyers to spend time in a neighborhood before making an offer.
Walk the streets.
Visit the local coffee shop.
Drive through in the evening.
Notice how the area feels.
Can you picture yourself there?
Could you imagine welcoming friends and family into that community?
Would it support the life you're hoping to create?
The truth is, a beautiful home in the wrong neighborhood rarely feels like "home."
On the other hand, a home that fits your lifestyle, surrounded by a community you love, often becomes one of the best decisions you'll ever make.
Central Oregon offers an incredible variety of places to live—from vibrant communities with recreation at your doorstep to peaceful neighborhoods where nature becomes part of your everyday routine.
Choosing where you live isn't simply about buying property.
It's about deciding how you want to spend your mornings, your weekends, and the years ahead.
That decision deserves thoughtful consideration.
