Yes, you can. Central Oregon is one of the few places where resort golf and a major ski mountain sit in the same region, so a summer tee time and a winter ski day can both be part of normal life. I am Sherrene Hagenbach-Winters, a Realtor with eXp Realty Oregon in Central Oregon, and resort and lifestyle communities are a big part of my work.

Where are the golf resort communities in Central Oregon?

The names I hear most are Eagle Crest near Redmond, Brasada Ranch near Powell Butte, Pronghorn near Bend, and Sunriver south of Bend. Each has its own feel, layout and rules, so it is worth touring more than one. Eagle Crest Resort, for example, lists three 18-hole golf courses plus an 18-hole putting course on its website.

How close is the skiing?

Visit Bend lists Mt. Bachelor about 22 miles southwest of Bend, roughly a 25 minute drive depending on road conditions. The drive runs along the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. From the resort communities farther north or east, plan on more time, and winter roads always set the real pace.

What should I look for in a home for both seasons?

Think about gear and weather as much as views. A garage with room for clubs, skis and boots. A mudroom or entry that handles snow. A driveway and street that are easy in winter. Outdoor space that works on a long summer evening. Having grown up around my father's high-end construction company, I also look at how the home handles snow load, drainage and sun.

What should I ask before buying in a resort community?

Ask what the HOA dues cover, whether golf or amenity access comes with ownership or costs extra, and what the rules say about short-term rentals and exterior changes. These answers differ from one community to the next, so get them in writing before you fall in love with a floor plan.
