How Should I Plan a House-Hunting Trip to Central Oregon?

The best house-hunting trip to Central Oregon starts before you board the plane: get pre-approved, narrow your list to two or three towns, and leave time to drive the roads you would use every day. I am Sherrene Hagenbach-Winters, a Realtor with eXp Realty Oregon in Central Oregon, and I help a lot of people make this move. Here is how to make three or four days count.
What should I do before a house-hunting trip to Central Oregon?
Talk to a lender and get pre-approved, so you know your real budget and can act if you find the one. Pick two or three towns to focus on, such as Bend, Redmond, Sisters or one of the resort communities. Then send your Realtor your must-haves and your deal-breakers, so the showings are lined up before you land.
How many days do I need for a house-hunting trip?
Three or four days works for most people. Day one, get the lay of the land. Day two and three, tour homes. Keep the last morning open for a second look at your favorite, because a home can feel different the second time.
What should I look at besides the house?
Drive the routes you would use: to the grocery store, the pharmacy, the airport, your doctor, the golf course or the trailhead. Go once in the morning and once in the evening. Look at the street itself, the view, the sun on the lot, and how the home sits on the land. Those things do not change after you move in.
Can I buy a home in Central Oregon without visiting?
Some buyers do, with video tours and a trusted local agent. Still, if you can come in person, do. The setting, the drive and the feel of the season are hard to judge from photos.
