Is Lava River Cave an easy walk? For most people, yes, at an unhurried pace. The Deschutes National Forest describes the cave as about a mile long, and the round trip is roughly 2.2 miles, about an hour and a half. It is closed in winter, though, so this is one to plan for next season.

Where is Lava River Cave?

It is in Newberry National Volcanic Monument, south of Bend near the Lava Lands Visitor Center. The Forest Service calls it the longest lava tube in Oregon and one of the first discovered in the state.

When is Lava River Cave open?

Do you need a reservation?

If you arrive by car, yes. The Forest Service uses timed reservation tickets on Recreation.gov, released on a rolling seven-day schedule with more opening 24 hours ahead. Cyclists do not need one.

What is the walk like?

The first 700 feet use boardwalks, stairs and railings over uneven, rocky ground. Beyond that the floor is natural rock and sand. It is dark and cool inside, so bring a warm layer, good shoes and a bright light for everyone in your group.
