Yes, the Smith Rock River Trail is an easy hike. The walk along the river takes about an hour to two hours, depending on how fast you like to walk. I am Sherrene Hagenbach-Winters, a Realtor with eXp Realty Oregon in Central Oregon, and Smith Rock sits right in my backyard near Terrebonne.

Is the Smith Rock River Trail an easy hike?

The river walk is. You can simply follow the riverbed, and even toddlers can walk that loop. Along the way you can watch people rock climbing most days. People come from all over the world to experience this place, and it is fun to see why.

Is any part of Smith Rock hard?

Yes. If you climb up and over the rock, there are steep areas, and it can be somewhat slippery going down the other side. That part is not a hike for everyone. If someone in your group does not want the steep climb, stay along the river and you will still have a beautiful walk.

What should I bring to Smith Rock?

Bring water, and keep it with you the whole time. It is surprisingly hot there. There is a little water fountain near the river, but I would not rely on it to keep you hydrated.

Do I need a parking permit at Smith Rock State Park?

Yes. Oregon State Parks requires a day-use parking permit, and you can buy one at the park. Parking is the real challenge from spring through fall, because locals still love their daily and weekly hike here and vacationers come too. Go early if you can.
