Is Pilot Butte an Easy Walk in Bend?

Pilot Butte is one of the easiest ways to get a big view in Bend without leaving town. The nature trail to the top is about a mile, and if you want something gentler, a base trail loops around the bottom. I am Sherrene Hagenbach-Winters, a Realtor with eXp Realty Oregon in Central Oregon, and in-town spots like this are a big part of daily life here.

How long is the trail up Pilot Butte?

Oregon State Parks describes a mile-long nature trail to the summit of the 480-foot butte. It climbs the whole way, so take it at your own pace. For an easier walk, Visit Bend describes the Base Trail, which circles the butte in about 1.6 miles with much less climbing.

Can you drive to the top of Pilot Butte?

Seasonally, yes. Oregon State Parks lists the summit road open to vehicles from May 1 through September 30, from 10 a.m. until dusk, in 2026. That makes the view possible for someone who cannot do the climb.

Can you hike Pilot Butte in winter?

The park says there is year-round access from the east side parking lot to all trails and the summit. In winter, trails can be icy, so good shoes or traction help. Check the park page for alerts before you go.
